A questionnaire survey was conducted for 144 first grade students of the Asahi University school for dental hygienists. The survey questions covered the influence of oral management of athletes on their ability to compete, knowledge of mouthguards and their purpose, experience of wearing mouthguards, knowledge of sports that require mouthguards, knowledge on how to obtain mouthguards, and desired price for a mouthguard. Eight percent of students answered that athletesʼ oral management affected their performance in a match. Of the respondents, 81% of students were aware of the use of mouthguards. Regarding the purpose of wearing mouthguards, prevention of tooth fracture was the most common answer. Information about mouthguards gained from television was the highest. 37% of the students had seen a mouthguard, and 6% of the students had worn one. There were very few students who answered that mouthguards are obligatory in karate and lacrosse. Most students answered that mouthguards could be obtained at a dental clinic, but some students said it would be available in an orthopedic or sports shop. Many students answered that the desired price of a mouthguard was 10,000 yen. From the above results, it was found that there was little knowledge of accurate sports dentistry in students attending the school for dental
