The load in the temporomandibular joint area was measured using a HAP/PZT micro-pressure sensor, and the muscular activity was measured using needle electrodes. The following results were obtained. 1) Although muscular discharge time became slightly shorter after surgery than before surgery, we found that the postoperative influence of surgical invasion was slight judging from the results of macroscopic observation, video tape recording and the degree of mouth opening. 2) We confirmed after surgery that, the non-working side masseter muscle started muscular activity earlier than the working side masseter muscle. This finding made it possible to more accurately determine the side on which the monkey performed masticatory movement. 3) We found that increasing load in the temporomandibular joint area was almost simultaneous with a peak in masseter muscle activity. This finding suggested that load in the temporomandibular joint area started to increase at the start of the occlusion phase. Furthermore, we found that a period of maximum load occurred during the resting stage of muscular activity of the masseter muscle. 4) Maximum pressure applied to the temporomandibular joint area increased to 0.5-1.5MPa along with the progression of masticatory movements on the working side, whereas it decreased to 0.5-2MPa on the nonworking side. These results suggested that load in the monkey temporomandibular joint area during masticating hard food started to increase in the occlusion phase. We found that maximum load occurred in the mouth opening phase judging from the proportion of each phase during the chewing
