In addition, this group has highly diverse dietary habits. Therefore, rodents are interesting animals for studying the evolutional advantage of certain jaw movements, and dietary adaptations of the masticatory muscles. The present paper is a review of studies of the anatomy, function, and dietary adaptation of the masticatory muscles. We indicate the scarcity of descriptions on the internal architecture and inequality of fiber density within a muscle layer or subdivision, which are necessary for detailed comparison of feeding mechanism. Anatomy of rodent masticatory muscles has mainly been interpreted in terms of jaw movement or production of occlusal pressure to date. Analyses of balancing mechanism, to which little attention have been paid, would clarify overall morphological adaptation for each dietary
