The thermal decomposition of aluminum phosphite was investigated thermoanalytically, together with x-ray diffraction and gaschromatography. Gypsum-bonded investments were prepared by the addition of aluminum phosphite, and SiO_2 (quartz, cristobalite) as a refractory. The thermal dimensional changes of the investments containing aluminum phosphite were measured and some physical properties of the investments were investigated. Also, the adaptability of castings made of Ag-Pd-Au alloys was examined using on MOD metal mold. The aluminum phosphite, which into decomposed at 400°C, expanded as the temperature increased, while the transformation aluminum orthophosphate and aluminum methaphosphate, which took place at further heating, contributed to the marked expansion of the investments. With a dental investment to which SiO_2 was added as an additional refractory, the thermal expansion increased almost linearly during the heating, when the amounts of Al _2(PHO_3)_3 and SiO_2 were controlled. It was possible to regulate the amount of heating expansion without changing the handling properties, such as water-to-powder ratio, flow, setting time and compressive strength. Nevertheless, the castings obtained with the trial investments showed good adaptability and their outer surfaces were smooth.\nSince the amount of thermal expansion could be easily regulated, it should be possible to develop dental investments that employ thermal expansion
