The subjects were 53 inmates (17 males and 36 females aged 66-97 years; mean aged 82.9 years) of an elderly health care facility in Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture. This investigation was conducted in December 2000.\nThe degree of dementia was I in 12, II in 13, III in 21, IV in 6, and V in 1. Dementia was in an early stage in most of the subjects and was advanced in only a few. Concerning the relationship between the degree of dementia and the degree of activity in daily life, dementia was negatively correlated with meals, understanding and expression, and social contact. Although the degree of dementia showed no significant correlation with the number of remaining teeth, it was negatively correlated with the number of functional teeth. Although the degree of dementia was not negatively correlated with the total score of the oral condition, it was negatively correlated with the total score of the degree of activity in daily life. It was suggested that dementia is associated with the oral condition and the activity of daily
