It has been known that interleukin (IL)-2, -5, -6 receptors(R) are able to induce survival signaling, while interferon (IFN) γ inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis signaling in many types of cells. While it has been reported that apoptosis plays an important role in odontogenesis, little is known about the cellular and molecular events involved. Intense immunohistochemical staining for IL-2, -5, -6 R, and survival signaling were co-localized in the cells of pre-ameloblats, presecretory, secretory and early maturation-stage ameloblasts, while they faded in the transition-stage ameloblasts. Intense staining of IFN-γ and induced apoptosis signaling were localized in the transition-stage ameloblasts. These findings suggest that different types of cytokine involved in either survival factor or apoptosis factor, regulate the apoptosis in
