PP 1 activity was assayed colormetrically with a synthetic substrate of p-nitrophenyl phosphate. Peroxynitrite inactivated 16.7 nM PP 1 in a few seconds with an IC_50 =0.45 μM. The peroxynitrite decomposition products, nitrite and nitrate, had no effect on activity. Inactivation was restored by Mn^<2+> or dithiothreitol but not by Fe^<2+> or sodium arsenite.
