A systematic online review of the main database and amanual search of relevant articles from refereed journals were performed. Thirty articles about surface roughnesswere found, of which only22 had information necessary to carry out statistical analysis. The categories were separatedinto normal bone tissue(15 articles)and augmented bone tissue(7 articles).The category of normal bone tissue was subdivided into three groups: in vivo animal studies(8 articles), in vivo humanstudies(3 articles), and in vitro studies(4 articles). All articles that belonged to the augmented bone tissuecategory were in vivo studies carried out in humans. A total of423 patients received1350 implants, of which725implants had accurate data.Since1991, several average degrees of roughness have been suggested to enhance implant osseointegration as follows:18-23μm in1991 and1995, 6.5μm in1999, and <_2.7μm in2000-2007; however, these averages varyconsiderably, which might reflect the different types of measurements and techniques used by each author.
