Abnormalities in occlusal contact at either the intercuspal position or its adjacent positions is a contributing factor to the development of jaw dysfunction, and evidence suggests that the quantitative factors of mandibular displacement between a habitual closing position and an intercuspal position can be used as an index for assessing the jaw function. In this study, we examined the interdependent relationship between the asymmetry indexes (AI) of an area of occlusal contact at the mandibular positions during both light clenching (LCP) and intermediate clenching (intercuspal position, or ICP) and the differences in asymmetry in the dynamic state of the caput mandibulae during habitual mandibular opening and closure. Slight mandibular displacements with intercuspation are mostly compensated by the displacement of the periodontal ligament of the upper and lower teeth and the jawbone, but exceeding the threshold value affects the tissues surrounding the temporomandibular joint, thus indicating a possible cause for the functional imbalance in the right and left caput
