Fiber bundle thickness was calculated based on muscle weight and fiber length, then defined as the muscle force index ( MFI ). MFIs for each compartment were resolved into three force components, in the rostrocaudal ( x ), dorsoventral ( y ), and mediolateral ( z ) directions, and their quantitative data correlations with age were analyzed. Furthermore, the pattern of cranial change was simulated using μCT imaging, and compared with developmental changes in the masseter. In all compartments examined, significant correlations existed between MFI and age, with MFI increases being larger for 5 superficial compartments and smaller for 3 deep compartments. MFIs in the 34 superficial layer and the most lateral compartments in the deep layer, as well as the sum of the MFIs of all masseter compartments, each increased in a similar manner. This finding suggests that developmental changes in the superficial layer and in the most lateral compartments in the deep layer may be most important for determining the growth pattern of the masseter force as a whole. The sum of the MFIs of all masseter compartments rapidly increased from 3 to 5 weeks of age, which seems due to weaning and the eruption of the third molars. As for the sum of the fiber lengths of all masseter compartments, as well as for cranial size, little changes were seen after 15 weeks, but masseter mass and the sum of the MFIs of all masseter compartments continued to increase until 38 weeks. This latter finding may be due to active feeding behavior after periods of growth. In the superficial layer ( which runs rostrocaudally ), the x-component of its MFI was found to be larger than the other two components. Similarly, the 7 compartments oriented dorsoventrally in turn had larger y-components, with the last 6 posterior compartments having roughly equal x- and y-component values. The present findings suggest that the mediolateral or rostrocaudal position of the compartments, their fiber directions, and feeding behavior may all play important roles in determining the growth pattern of the masseter.
