There are commercially available mouth guards, such as the off-the-shelf type, and custom-made mouth guards, which are produced by dentists.Custom-made mouth guards are generally produced by the lost wax method ore sheet molding method with heatpressurization. As a material of custom-made mouth guards, the SIS sheet, with high-level shock absorbency compared to the commonly used EVA sheet, has been developed. In this study, we conducted an investigation regarding feelingson wearing a mouth guard composed of an SIS sheet by interviewing 19 subjects.Although mouth guards can be easily produced by the sheet molding method with heat-pressurization, inappropriateheating and molding times lead to losses in compatibility and material deterioration. In this study, we also examined the internal temperature distribution of sheets prepared by the molding method with heat-pressurization and the effects of heating methods on the compatibility of mouth guards. The internal temperature of EVA and SIS sheets was continuously measured. Two sheets with a diameter of 120 mm and a thickness of 2.0 mm were pressed to each other with a thermocouple placed between them, and the temperature was measured under 2 conditions: one was heating one side of the sheets with the top surface of a heat-pressurization molding device (one-sided heating), and the other was heating both sides of the sheets using the heat-pressurization molding device and a 350-W halogen heater placed 30 mm below the lower surface of the sheets (two-sided heating). To examine the compatibility of mouth guards, 5 samples each were produced by the one- and two-sided heating methods. Interviews with users demonstrated that the feelings on wearing an SIS-sheet mouth guard were good. In the measurement of the internal temperature of EVA and SIS sheets, the result was better by two- than by one-sided heating, and the compatibility of mouth guards was higher by the latter compared to the former heating method. These findings indicated that the SIS sheet was a suitable material for mouth guards, and two-sided heating was useful for the production of mouth guards with high-level
