"従来、能における家元制度の成立は観世(かんぜ)流の十五世大夫(家元)である観世元章(もとあきら)[1722〜74]が行った改革の事例をもとに説明されてきた。本稿ではその比較対象となり得る事例として、喜多(きた)流の九世大夫である喜多七大夫古能(しちだゆうひさよし)[1742〜1829]を取り上げ、その著作活動を軸に、以下の問題について考察した。まず、家元を継承して最初に取りかかったのは公式謡本(うたいぼん)の刊行だったが、これは、当時すでに観世流によって完成されていた、謡の教授システムの整備に追いつこうとする動きであった。また、同時に始められた喜多流伝書の再編も、観世流における伝書需要の実態を受けたものであった。ただ、絶大な権威を父から譲り受けた元章とは異なり、古能の場合、先代までの養子相続による芸系の乱れから、流儀内の基盤の整備はもっと差し迫っていた。家元継承時の古能の危機意識は、謡本刊行直前の喜多流の状況や、古能自身の回想から知られる。そこで古能は、喜多流の統一した演じ方を定めるため、宗家や別家、弟子家の伝書を集めて内容を比較するという方法をとったのだった。古能によって再編された各種伝書は、流儀の弟子に対する指導用書の役割を帯びるようになった。特に、大名など高級武家層への伝書相伝の状況からは、裕福な素人弟子を対象として、伝書が経済的安定に寄与していたことが知られる。ただ、こうした相伝や能面の仲介など金銭の授受を伴う活動は、むしろ古能の隠居後、すなわち「家元」でなくなった後に盛んに見られることから、家元制度の経済面に関するさらなる分析が必要であることを示唆した。",
