内容記述 | In this article, I recorded and analyzed my English reading class for nursing students. First I wrote how I found the material, and then how I made the worksheets. After that, I described how I taught, adding my comments and analyses. I closely reviewed the students’study reports and quoted some of them. Judging from their writings, most of them came to acquire a basic, but very important way of reading English text, for example, to find a verb first, to stop before a conjunction or a relative pronoun, to read from left to right by sense units and so on. In both worksheet making and lesson designing I adopted the Terasima Method, which is a unique way of teaching devised especially for the EFL learners in Japan. As an example, in reading the text, students use three marks that show the syntax. I showed the number of marks for each paragraph and let them think where to put them as a group-work task. Word meaning is given to each word, so they don’t have to consult a dictionary. They can enjoy reading and focus their attention only on word order recognition. As for test taking, they can try it as many times as they wish, which helps motivate them. They sat for a small test of syntax marking at the beginning of a lesson and many of them tried it a number of times to get full marks. Through my teaching I noticed that even the top-group students sometimes have some difficulty in reading, especially long, complicated sentences. A student, who was assessed level 2 of EIKEN IBA by scoring by far the highest points, repeated syntax marking tests. I believe her struggle is attributed to the neglect of teaching reading skills that should be the main task for the EFL learners. | |||||
