We compiled and examined statistics on oral mucosal diseases with the intention of understanding the features of the diseases. Here, we report our findings. The subjects of our investigation were 460 patients with oral mucosal disease who consulted our department in the past 5 years, between April 1997 and March 2004. There were 225 male patients, and 235 female patients. Most of the patients were in their 50s, and the other at least 60 years old. The oral mucosal diseases were classified as follows: inflammation such as inflammation of the tongue accounted for the most cases, 105 cases (22.8%), followed by 102 cases (22.2%) of benign tumors such as fibroma, and 74 cases (16.1%) of cysts such as mucocele, 59 cases (12.8%) of hypercritic lesions such as a leukoplakia and Lichen planus, 35 cases (7.6%) of trauma, 33 cases (7.2%) of deformity, 28 cases (6.1%) of allergy, 23 cases (5.0%) of malignant tumors, and 20 cases (4.3%) of epulis.
